Why It Works

Art isn't just fun.
It's medicine.

Every My Good Brain workshop is designed by Dr. Danessa Mayo — licensed clinical psychologist and visual artist — to connect the act of making with the science of emotional wellbeing.

Teens don't need to talk about their feelings to benefit. Making something with your hands is enough to shift your nervous system, build confidence, and give shape to what lives inside you.

🧠
Nervous System Regulation
Repetitive, focused art-making — like quilling or bookbinding — activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety.
🎨
Emotional Externalizing
Using color, texture, and shape to express inner states gives feelings a form — making them easier to recognize, name, and process.
✨
Identity & Confidence
Completing a handmade object — something that didn't exist before you made it — builds genuine self-efficacy and a sense of creative agency.
🤝
Community & Belonging
Making alongside other teens in a small, supportive studio environment builds connection without requiring vulnerability. Belonging through doing.

Questions

Common Questions

Absolutely not. Every TCA workshop is designed for all skill levels — including teens who don't consider themselves "artistic." The whole point is to make something and feel good doing it, not to produce perfect work.
Just yourself! Every workshop includes all the art materials, tools, and supplies you need. For Clay Earrings and Screenprinting, wear clothes you don't mind getting a little ink or clay on — it washes out.
All workshops take place at My Good Brain's studio at Liberty Station: 2785 Truxtun Rd, Suite 202, San Diego CA 92106. We're in the North Promenade Arts District — parking is free and plentiful.
Register through Sawyer (our primary booking platform) or Eventbrite. Links for each workshop are above. Space is limited to 8–10 teens per session, so we recommend registering early — sessions do fill up.
We offer a full refund if you cancel at least 5 days before your workshop. Cancellations within 5 days may receive a credit toward a future session. Please email hello@mygoodbrain.org with any questions.
Every My Good Brain workshop is grounded in social-emotional learning and facilitated with attention to how the creative process connects to mental wellness. We're not just teaching technique — we're building a connection between making and feeling. The studio is small, intentional, and supportive.
Yes. My Good Brain is a 501(c)(3) arts nonprofit (EIN: 86-1952565) dedicated to youth mental wellness through art and play. Workshop fees directly support our free programming for Title 1 schools in San Diego. Donations are tax-deductible.
