What is Self Harm?

Self injury, more commonly known as self harm, is any act in which the intention is to cause harm to oneself. This includes physical actions such as cutting or scratching oneself, but also actions that cause emotional harm, like looking up triggering material online. 

Triggering: anything that causes emotional distress

Some examples of physical self injurious behavior:

Examples of emotional self injurious behavior:

  • Hitting one’s body on hard objects or punching one’s body

  • Biting or pinching

  • Burning oneself

  • Picking at wounds or skin

  • Overdosing on medications, alcohol, or drugs

  • Participating in risky behavior such as unsafe sex or reckless driving

Having an overly emotional reaction to a not so big problem

  • Having a pattern of abusive relationships or harmful friendships

  • Unable to maintain friendships or relationships

  • Thoughts of self-doubt

  • Poor self-esteem

  • Body image issues

  • Internalizing your conflicted emotions, build walls, and refuse to seek help from others
